Rookie Lifeguard Courses
Hello from the Minnows to Sharks Rookie Team,
As some of you will already know, the Rookie Lifeguard Programme is the Junior Award scheme
of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK).
For most children Rookie Lifeguard will be their first opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play.
This is a new venture for us, and we feel very passionately about providing our children with the opportunity to develop their
swimming while learning a life saving skill. Children will have a renewed enthusiasm for the sport and meet new friends.
The Rookie skills will prepare Rookies to take better care of themselves, their family and
friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain
survival, rescue and sport skills as well as life support and water safety elements. Rookie Lifeguard fulfils all of the Key
Stage 2 water safety elements of the National Curriculum. The award is largely water based and Children will need short and
a t-shirt over their swimming costume.
The programme is primarily aimed at children aged 8-14 years although the skill level of the
Rookies is the best guide for award suitability. Starting with Stage 1 of the Bronze award and progressing to Stage 3 of Gold,
Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability level suitable for swimmers who have fundamental movement skills in the water (National
Swim Award phase 7) and progresses to the level of performing lifesaving tows.
There are also two dry awards called Water Safety and Life Support, two Achievement awards
and additional bolt-on awards to keep our Rookies interested and excited by the programme. The Rookie Master Lifeguard award
is the ultimate achievement for a Rookie which they can gain by achieving the Gold Stage 3, Water Safety, Life Support and
a number of the bolt-on awards.
